B VISA “BASIC INFORMATION”
The B nonimmigrant visa is for individuals who come to the United States for business (B-1) and pleasure (B-2). Majority of people who enter the United States each year do so as nonimmigrant visitors in the B visa category. Usually B visa holder’s stays in the United States are brief, and involve such activities as touring, visiting family members, friends, obtaining health care, or conducting business on behalf of an overseas employer. B visa holder’s trips are temporary and are not authorized to work in the United States. B visa holder is usually given permission to stay in the United States for six months but is eligible to apply for extensions or change nonimmigrant status. Those who come to the United States on B-1 will be granted only a period of stay necessary to conduct his or her business. Most B-1 holders are granted to stay here for less than three months, and only under unusual circumstances would be approved to stay here for more than six months. Those who come to the United States on B-2 visa are automatically granted a stay for six months (in some cases for three months), even if the visitor intends to remain less than six months. In order to obtain the B visa, applicant has to apply for such visa at the United States consulate.
